REPORT BY TASK FORCE ON REPOSITIONING OF SKÅL

Dear Skålleagues,

The most recent update of the Task Force document on the repositioning of Skål, dated 24 May 2010 can be found by clicking here. The document is also available on the members only area of the Skål International website.

The document was presented to the meeting of the International Skål Council held in Quebec on 3 May 2010.

The Executive Committee of Skål International discussed the document during its meeting held in Quebec on 5 May 2010. The Executive Committee decided, before making any comment on the document to consult the membership as the document contained some major changes for the future of the organisation.

The Executive Committee therefore requests that the Clubs worldwide discuss this document at length prior to 31 July 2010 and to send their comments to the Secretary General at skal@skal.travel with copy to Thomas Vincent, Chairman of the Task Force at thomasvincent@globalhospitalityinc.com

For the information of members the Task Force was set up by the Executive Committee during its meeting held in Paris in April 2009. The Task Force was asked to study, summarize and recommend changes the members would like to see in the future direction of Skal.

As this is an important document for the future of Skål, I would ask you to give it your urgent attention and we look forward to receiving your comments by the deadline of 31 July 2010.

Best regards and Skål

LES DIX ALPES CHALLENGE

Aidan Midgley, Vice President, Skål International Bunbury Margaret River writes the following:

I know everyone is busy but I would like to invite your Skål Club to support me for the Les Dix Alpes challenge taking place on 20th June this year – I am cycling 1081km! From Como in Italy to Nice in France over the mountains! This is a Challenge that all Skål Clubs around the world could take on and register their support by giving a few dollars giving meaning to “Doing Business among friends – Worldwide” It would be great to see other Skål Clubs names on the list of supports!

I am doing this ride and raising money for a great cause, the Oncology Children’s Foundation (OCF) OCF is a successful Australian charity that funds research programs to find cures for childhood cancers with high mortality rates. Every year 700 Australian children are diagnosed with cancer, 200 of them won’t survive.

I am putting a big effort into training for the Les Dix Alpes challenge but my challenge is not as huge as the challenge that kids suffering from cancer are undertaking. My challenge is all over in a couple of months, the challenge of children suffering from cancer goes on for many months, sometimes years.

Training is hard right now as I can only do 1 to 2 hours before work and after work and its all in the dark! I hope you can find it in your heart to give a few dollars. Your support will motivate me to keep going.

You can sponsor me on www.everydayhero.com.au/aidan_midgley. Please help me reach my target of $5,000.

Thank you for your support and of course all donations are tax deductible.

WORLD TOURISM DAY 2010 to Celebrate ‘Tourism and Biodiversity’

wtdAs the world comes together to celebrate 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity, UNWTO is happy to announce that the World Tourism Day (WTD) celebrations, hosted officially this year by China, will take place under the theme Tourism and Biodiversity (27 September, Guangdong Province). The theme provides a unique opportunity to raise public awareness of the importance of biodiversity to tourism and the role of sustainable tourism in the conservation of life on Earth.

Biodiversity is a key tourism asset and fundamental to its sustained growth. Intact and healthy ecosystems form the cornerstone of thousands of tourist enterprises and products worldwide, attracting hundreds of millions of tourists each year. As a leading economic activity, sustainable tourism has an important role and responsibility in managing and conserving biological natural resources. As a key source of income and employment, tourism often provides strong incentives to protect biodiversity. Sustainable tourism can furthermore generate significant revenues for conservation and community development and help to raise awareness of biodiversity issues.
