Skål International Capricornia & Brisbane

Skål International Capricornia and Skål International Brisbane have joined forces to support tourism education in Queensland. Through the combined efforts of both these Clubs, a donation of more than 380 textbooks and government publications, plus 120 journals, have been donated to the Holmes Institute in Brisbane. This company trains future tourism managers and hospitality staff and supplies trainees to hotels and resorts around Brisbane and beyond. They also train overseas students, so the potential reach of this donation goes beyond Queensland. Skålleague Jillian Litster donated her collection of tourism textbooks and journals from her years as a lecturer in tourism with Central Queensland University. Skålleague Raymond Faulkner (GM, Holiday Inn Brisbane) facilitated the contact with Holmes Institute and the logistics for transfer and handover of the resource. Thanks to Skålleague Ross McLean (Queensland Rail) who made it possible to transfer the books from Rockhampton to Brisbane. All up there were 16 boxes of books for transfer, amounting to approximately 230kg of material. Fortunately the team of Wayne Johns, Dawn & Norm Roadley, and Linda Bentley were on hand to assist Jillian in loading the boxes into the QR cage for transfer. The cage was met at the other end by Kate Gerits and her team from Holiday Inn Brisbane who collected them for the handover, which took place on April 8th. This donation of materials, by Skål International Clubs (Capricornia & Brisbane), has very conservatively been estimated to be worth over $3000. More importantly though is that all the books will be labeled with information about Skål International and thus have the potential to raise the profile of the organization with the next generation of industry personnel.
