Skal Awards 2010- Austria

Franz Klammer was awarded with the Skål Tourism Quality Award 2010 in Velden/Carinthia-Austria.

On 17 April 2010 Skål International Kärnten (Carinthia) celebrated its 50th anniversary and the bestowal of the Skål Tourism Quality Award 2010 in the Casino Velden (Gambling Casino).

Skål International Austria grants this award every year for outstanding services in tourism/quality to personalities. The famous “Ambassador of Carinthia” and Austrian alpine ski champion Franz Klammer was the award winner of 2010.

Among over 90 Skålleague guests from Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia, Croatia and South Africa were Skål International World President Nik Racic, Skål International Austria President Heinz Risska, the Governor of Carinthia Gerhard Dörfler, the Mayor of Velden Ferdinand Vouk and Skål International Kärnten President Otto Wanker.

Also among the honourable guests: the former World President Birger Backman, the Honorary President of Austria Mario Rehulka, Peter Hrabac, Otto Wanker, Peter Fürstner, Gerhard Burgstaller, Johannes Obersteiner (represented by his son) Klaus Ledwinka, Honorary Member Peter Nedomansky, as well as Secretary and Skål International Councillor Sylvia Liebisch.

The comedian Alexander Telesko "The Pharmacist" of the famous Villacher Carnival, who acted as entertainer for this very special evening, had composed a Skål-Blues for this event.

The Governor of Carinthia Gerhard Dörfler emphasized in his speech the importance of Franz Klammer as an international ambassador of Carinthia. Despite his many successes as an outstanding alpine ski champion and media star Franz "always remained humble, kind and helpful”.

Franz Klammer, born in 1953, won a total of 25 World Cup Ski Races and in 1976 he was the gold medalist at the Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck in downhill racing. In 1985 he retired from active ski racing. Sport continues to play an important role in his life and today Franz Klammer is known as a popular figure par excellence.
After a serious accident of his brother Klaus in 1998, he founded a Foundation named after him, supporting athletes in need after serious accidents.

As an avid golfer he collects money for the Franz Klammer Foundation primarily in the context of golf tournaments. Not only by his success as an outstanding skier, also afterwards he has made a substantial contribution to the good image of the Austrian tourism and also marked same sustainably.

Besides his work as a consultant and UN ambassador, Franz Klammer is also a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy, which since 2000 awards the Laureus World Sports Award, also known as sports-Oscars.
