Marbella set to host Skål International Spain congress

marbellaIT HAS BEEN a difficult few years for Marbella but Spain’s capital of glamour is working hard to recapture the sparkle of its golden years in the limelight. The city is well known for its championship golf courses, its five-star hotels, its select boutiques, its glitzy beach clubs and its celebrity visitors but it is also consolidating its reputation as a prime congress destination.

The latest organisation to choose Marbella for its annual congress is Skål International (skal.travel), or specifically the Spanish branch of what is the oldest and largest association of travel and tourism professionals in the world, covering all spectrums of the industry.

The Skål International Spain national congress will be held at Marbella’s Palacio de Congresos from 10 to 14 March, bringing together top tourism managers and executives from throughout Spain.

9th Skål International Ecotourism Awards

The entry form which can be found at Ecotourism Awards Application Form (pdf) which together with three sets of the following complementary information is to be sent to the General Secretariat of Skål International by the deadline of 30 June 2010:

1. General description not exceeding 100 words (1 page)
2. Brochure(s), any published material
3. CD - Maximum five minutes - Preferably a Power Point presentation with illustrations/pictures highlighting ecotourism aspects of the entry. (Entries without a CD will not qualify)
4. Letter of verification from the local or National Tourism Organisation, from the Government department or local Authority.

Entrepreneuring Sustainable Tourism

jack_bookJack Sofier, a member of Skål International Algarve has recently published a book on sustainable tourism entitled “Entrepreneuring Sustainable Tourism” Jack Sofier specialises in sustainable tourism, conservation and environmental protection. He has been a judge of the Skål International Ecotourism Awards on two occasions. The cost of the book is €10.00. Skål International & UNEP signed a MOU

unepSkål International and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, following a series of meetings between representatives of UNEP and Skål International. The object of the memorandum is to provide a framework of cooperation and understanding and to facilitate a collaboration between the two organisations to advance their shared goals and objectives in regard to working with the tourism sector to encourage and create a knowledge-sharing network to incorporate sustainability as one of the core values of any economic activity.

Skål International Book

bookA special Skål Story book was launched during the celebrations in Paris. Honorary President Antonio García del Valle, who has written the history of Skål, provided numerous historical records going back to the foundation of Skål in 1932, two years before it became an international association.

The book was generously sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Turkey. The Skål Story is now available for sale from the General Secretariat at €25 plus postage and packing. Twenty per cent of the sale price will go to the Florimond Volckaert Fund. Please send us an e-mail if you are interested at skal@skal.travel

Haiti Relief Fund

Dear Skålleagues, Dear Friends,
 
During the meeting in Zagreb on 5 February 2010, the Executive Committee unanimously approved to support the SOS CHILDRENS VILLAGES-HAITI.
 
The principles of this organisation are to offer children and orphans a true family life and moreover for brothers and sisters to stay together. You will find a link to learn more about this organisation and its actions worldwide but, as far as we are concerned, it is their actions in two villages in Haiti which we will be supporting.
 
Thanks to those who have already donated we have been able to forward this week a first donation of Euros 5000 which will be used for urgent needs locally but we still need your continued support to participate in the reconstruction of the country.
